Are Larger Computer Monitors Always Better?

No, in fact, they can be an effective waste of money in three ways. They sometimes don't bring enough new features to the table to be worth their price. Large monitors also consume more power and can bleed money from your business by reducing your productivity in a way you don't even notice. This article walks you through all three possible aspects.

Today, a normal size monitor means either 22" or 24". If you have a display that big, you're in the middle of the Bell curve. Anything bigger than 25 inches across, however, constitutes as large and usually is priced accordingly.

Let's take the Viewsonic's value monitor, VA2702W for example. It's a full-HD 27" screen with digital and analogue inputs, DVI-D of the former and the usual D-Sub 15 of the latter. So long it sounds just like any other 24" models tech specs. There are two small problems with it. You have to part with 9 to have one, which happens to be more than what the very decent VX2450WM-LED costs. The second issue is its lack of LED backlight.

Reduced Productivity

The consensus is that the bigger the monitor, the faster multi-tasking becomes. What if multi-tasking is not one of the preferred ways of operation? What if multi-tasking actually hurts your work performance?

There are times when you don't want to have more things on your monitor than what you're working with at the very moment. If you're a writer, or in any way associated with creative writing, you don't want anything else to be on your screen than the piece you're working on.

Distractions hurt productivity, and text is generally not as big of a pixel hog as anything else, really. When you can't fill the screen with your work, an extra browser window or your twitter client finds its way to becoming a permanent resident, a constant source of distraction.

If you let that happen, you can essentially stop working, because you're unlikely to be able to shift back into 'the zone' for up to half an hour after shutting down social clutter.

Of course, it regards monitors that are bigger than 1080P. 1080P 27" units don't have a unique selling point strong enough to make you fork out the money. When you have a 2560 x 1440 WQHD monitor and don't absolutely need the extra space it gives above 1920x1080, you're wasting your resources, time and money.

Consumption

You might not think this is a significant part in your monthly spendings, and it is not. On a yearly scale, however, a typical non-LED monitor costs you anywhere between and depending on size. A cheap 27" display with no LED technology, such as the VA2702W, can consume much more than that.

Let me put it into context so that you have something to relate to. Viewsonics VX2450WM-LED sips a maximum of 26 Watts of electricity. The 27" substitute mentioned above gobbles a whole 59 Watts during typical operation. It's a number you can plow, stretch and spread over your yearly figures. It's 136% higher than the 26W mentioned before.

Conclusion

You might have been thinking about buying a cheap large monitor, because it sounded like a good deal. It almost never is, unless you have a solid, valid and good reason to do so. For instance, you're mounting the screen on the wall and plan on sitting farther than a couple inches away from it. Then you have a use for the extra-large pixels.

Maybe you're a graphics artist working with huge images. You can make good use of an XL display, but that's not the only requirement a professional display device needs to fill. You also need S-IPS panel and WQHD resolution, instantly pushing the scope away from around-0 to 0 and above, which is way outside of what this article intended to cover.

Are larger computer monitors always better? They almost never are, if being big is all they do.
